Having served as Pentagon press secretary under both George W Bush and Barack Obama, then joined the oil major BP following its Gulf of Mexico disaster, Geoff Morrell was familiar with drama.

But nothing can have prepared him for Disney.

In December last year, Morrell tweeted the news that he was joining the Californian entertainment giant as head of corporate affairs. He was excited about working with new chief executive Bob Chapek — a “change agent” with “big plans for the company”. Morell’s job was a big one in its own right: running corporate affairs at Disney is like being foreign secretary of a small country. His predecessor, responsible only for communications, was paid more than $7 million (£5.8 million) last year.
