Dressed in a dark grey shalwar kameez shirt and tracksuit bottoms, Imran Khan fidgets and repositions his bandaged leg on a footstool. As he recuperates from being shot, the former cricketer seems tired. And frustrated.

“I knew my life would be at risk when I came into politics [26 years ago]. I conquered my fear of dying,” he says as he light-heartedly deflects questions about how the attempted assassination three weeks ago has impacted his family. “[My wife] saw me [wave to the crowd] when she turned on the TV. So she thought I was fine. She didn’t realise I had three bullets in my leg.”

His expression turns serious for a moment as he reflects on how his sons, Sulaiman Isa and Kasim, reacted.
