The corridors of the Wales team hotel are plastered with sentences from Michael Sheen’s impassioned speech that went viral a few months back. Aimed at inspiring the players at the World Cup finals, the Hollywood actor made references to the Wales manager, Rob Page, the late Gary Speed and Dafydd Iwan, the folk singer who gave his own pep talk when he spoke to the players at training.

Over the past decade, Wales have tapped heavily into the pride and passion that the team should feel playing for their country, and then embraced the ethos to give them something more when they needed to stay in matches and nick unlikely results. Their playing style has reflected that, going back to Chris Coleman’s time in charge.
