Conservatives have taken the first shot at the credibility of Jack Smith (pictured), who was appointed by AG Merrick Garland as the special counsel overseeing criminal charges against former President Donald Trump
The special counsel appointed to oversee criminal inquiries into former President Donald Trump is married to a producer for Michelle Obama‘s documentary and donated $1,000 to Joe Biden‘s 2020 presidential campaign.
The ability for impartiality of Special Counsel Jack Smith is being brought into question following the fresh revelations.
Katy Chevingy is listed on IMDb as a producer for Michelle Obama’s 2020 documentary Becoming – a tid bit conservatives are seizing now that her husband will be in charge of the inquiries into Trump.
They are also using the OpenSecrets revelations that Chevingy donated $1,000 to Biden’s 2020 campaign in 2020 to diminish Smith’s credibility.
This is the first drop in the bucket attempting to discredit Smith, who Attorney General Merrick Garland announced on Monday would be put in charge of overseeing the criminal charges against Trump for taking documents to Mar-a-Lago, as well as parts of the January 6, 2021 insurrection.
Smith has overseen a variety of high-profile cases over his decades-long career, including prosecuting a sitting U.S. senator, prosecuting war crimes at The Hague as well as cases against gang members who murdered NYC police officers.
His appointment, however, is being dragged by Republicans for his wife’s production in leftist films and donations to Biden’s presidential campaign against Trump.
‘You would think that if the stated purpose to avoid any type of concern about bias were sincere, then they would at least check to see whether or not when you shake the family tree of the special counsel, any virulent Trump haters, Never Trumpers, Biden supporters fall out,’ Florida Representative Matt Gaetz said in an interview with Steve Bannon Tuesday.
Smith’s wife Katy Chevingy is a producer for Michelle Obama’s 2020 film Becoming, and also donated $1,000 to Joe Biden’s 2020 presidential campaign against Donald Trump. This has caused Republicans to question whether Chevingy’s husband can be impartial
The firebrand pro-Trumper demanded that Congress put an end to the ‘political exercise against President Trump.’
Other than Becoming, Chevigny also worked on other far-left films like Dark Money, which focused on the Citizens United v. FEC Supreme Court case, and other socially liberal films like E-Team and Deadline.
‘You just can’t make this stuff up,’ Georgia Republican Representative Andrew Clyde tweeted of the revelations about Smith’s wife.
‘Katy Chevigny, wife of Jack Smith—the special counsel appointed by DOJ to go after President Trump, donated to Joe Biden’s campaign and produced Michelle Obama’s documentary. America cannot stand with a corrupt, two-tiered justice system,’ Clyde added.
Prominent political figures often receive backlash for the actions of their spouses.
A recent example is Supreme Court Justice Clarence Thomas’s wife Virginia ‘Ginni’ Thomas was targeted by the January 6 select committee this fall for messaging officials about challenging the 2020 presidential elections.
House Speaker Nancy Pelosi said that Justice Thomas should recuse himself from any JAnuary 6 cases given his wife’s actions.
Defenders of Smith who claims he can remain impartial in the case point to Ginni Thomas when conservatives started rolling over Chevigny’s activity.
