Phillip Schofield’s resignation from ITV – and the scandal surrounding his departure – is continuing to cause chaos at the broadcaster.

Last week, the 61-year-old presenter resigned from hosting This Morning as he admitted to having an “unwise but not illegal” affair with a younger male colleague and lying about it.

The network’s bosses are now facing questions from MPs over the scandal, while ITV has ordered a review into Phillip Schofield’s departure from the show amid reports of a “toxic” environment behind the scenes.

As questions continue to be asked, we have taken a look at the key players at the broadcaster involved.

Piers Morgan has questioned the “relentless persecution” of Phillip Schofield after he admitted to having an affair with a younger colleague on This Morning.

In an op-ed for The Sun, he said he found the aftermath of Schofield’s exit “brutal to watch” and yet “entirely unsurprising”.

In his first interview since leaving ITV and This Morning, Schofield said he was “utterly broken and ashamed” but that he had not “groomed” the man.

He also denied there had ever been a “feud” between him and his “TV sister” Willoughby.

“I’ve lost my best friend. I let her down,” he told The Sun.

“Holly did not know. And she was one of the first texts that I sent, to say, ‘I am so, so sorry that I lied to you’.”

Following Phillip Schofield’s first interview since the affair scandal, Piers Morgan has asked everyone to “stop this relentless persecution” of the former This Morning presenter.

“Unless Phillip Schofield’s ex-lover contradicts his version of events to @TheSun & BBC, then it’s time to stop this relentless persecution of a guy who’s lost everything and looks right on the edge to me,” Morgan wrote on Twitter.

“He doesn’t seem to have committed any crime, and he’s not a Govt minister.”

Phillip Schofield has denied “grooming” the ITV colleague with whom he had an affair while working together on This Morning, in his first sit-down interview to address the scandal.

In the interview with the BBC’s Amol Rajan, Schofield appeared distraught and exhausted as he reflected on the fallout from the revelations of the past two weeks, comparing the backlash to the one received by late Love Island presenter Caroline Flack, and asked: “How much are you supposed to take?”

He credited his daughters with “saving his life”, saying they been looking after him and claiming they were “scared to let me out of their sight”.

On Friday 26 May, it was revealed that Schofield had been dropped by his agent after the TV host admitted to lying about an “unwise but not illegal” consensual relationship he had with a younger male colleague on the daytime series while being married to his wife.
